With the first rest day in sight, the GC-men decided to let the early escapees battle for the stage victory. Looking at the names, there was no doubt who would win from the breakaway: Winner Anacona. The born Winner dropped Bob Jungels and Javi Moreno on the final climb to go to the biggest victory in his young cycling career. It almost brought him the red jersey as well. At the end he came 9 seconds short due to a late attack of Alberto Contador. Only Joaquim Rodríguez and Nairo Quintana could return in the wheel of El Pistolero. Quintana is now the new leader with a few seconds advantage.
